Šekspirove priče

Šekspirove priče

Charles Lamb, Mary Lamb

Shakespeare's stories bring prose retellings of Shakespeare's plays, among them Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest. The collection brings their plots, characters and enduring themes closer to young people.

Tales from Shakespeare is a collection by Charles and Mary Lamb, first published in 1807. The authors adapted twenty of William Shakespeare’s plays into prose narratives to make their complex plots, characters, and themes accessible to younger readers. Mary Lamb primarily adapted the comedies, while Charles Lamb handled the tragedies, all while striving to preserve the spirit of the originals and some of Shakespeare’s distinctive language.

The collection includes some of Shakespeare’s most famous works. Romeo and Juliet depicts the tragic love between young people from feuding families; Hamlet tells the story of a Danish prince attempting to uncover the truth about his father’s death and avenge his murder; Macbeth illustrates how an unbridled lust for power leads to crime, fear, and ruin; and King Lear explores family, ingratitude, power, and the painful realization of truth. In The Tempest, Prospero confronts his enemies with the aid of magic, and the story concludes with forgiveness and reconciliation. Comedies such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, and The Merchant of Venice feature mistaken identities, romantic misunderstandings, humor, and unexpected twists.

The Lambs transform the dramatic texts into coherent narratives, omitting much of the more complex dialogue and secondary plotlines. At the heart of the stories remain Shakespeare’s characters and universal themes: love and hate, jealousy, revenge, betrayal, greed, honor, friendship, forgiveness, and the struggle for power. Shakespeare's stories are not a substitute for the original plays, but an accessible introduction to Shakespeare's literary world and his most famous stories.
