Sie eröffnet ein renommiertes Restaurant in Shanghai und erlangt finanzielle Unabhängigkeit. Ihre drei Töchter – Grace, Mercy und Joy – schickt sie zur Ausbildung nach Amerika, in der Hoffnung, ihnen eine Zukunft fernab der Wirren in China zu sichern.

Als der Kommunismus das Land erobert und die Kulturrevolution tobt, wählt jede Tochter einen anderen Weg: Eine kehrt zu ihrer Mutter zurück, eine bleibt im Westen, und die dritte sucht ihren eigenen Weg zwischen den beiden Welten. Frau Liang bleibt in China, erlebt die Veränderungen mit und beschützt ihre Familie so gut sie kann. Buck schreibt erneut über eine Frau, die, von ihrem Mann verlassen, nicht der Trauer nachgibt, sondern handelt; und über die Spaltung von Familie und Heim zwischen der alten und der neuen Welt.
