Čudnovate zgode šegrta Hlapića
The novel follows the apprentice Hlapić, who runs away from the unjust Master Mrkonja and embarks on a journey full of adventures. By helping others, he demonstrates kindness and courage, ultimately contributing to a happy resolution.
The Marvelous Adventures of Hlapić the Apprentice is one of the most famous Croatian children's novels by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. At the heart of the story is Hlapić, a young shoemaker's apprentice working for the stern Master Mrkonja. After the master unjustly punishes him for making boots that were too large—despite having followed the master's own instructions—Hlapić decides to leave the workshop and set out into the world. He carries with him a cheerful spirit, resourcefulness, and a desire to use his shoemaking skills to help the people he meets.
During his journey, Hlapić experiences a series of unusual and exciting adventures. He meets a girl named Gita, who becomes his loyal companion, and together they encounter various people whom they try to help. They meet the poor and unfortunate, but also dangerous figures like the Black Man, who lands them in serious trouble. In every situation, Hlapić distinguishes himself through honesty, diligence, courage, and a willingness to do good deeds without expecting a reward.
After numerous adventures, the story concludes with a happy return and the resolution of a mystery surrounding Gita's origins and Master Mrkonja's family. Hlapić's journey thus becomes a tale of growing up, friendship, and the triumph of good over evil. In a simple yet imaginative way, the novel highlights the values of hard work, honesty, compassion, and helping others. This edition, prepared by Marija Duš, is intended for classroom reading and for introducing students to one of the foundational works of Croatian children's literature.
