The narrative features a gallery of vivid characters: a famous actor suffering from paranoia, a retiree who learns she is terminally ill, a bestselling author who refuses to use a mobile phone, a computer technician who assumes another person's identity after receiving the wrong SIM card, and an internet troll leading a double life. Kehlmann masterfully intertwines their fates, blurring the boundaries between reality, the digital world, and literary fiction. Through a deft blend of dark humor, absurdity, and philosophical reflection, the novel explores how modern media and technology alter our perception of ourselves. Fame raises crucial questions about the reality of our identities, what it means to disappear in today’s interconnected world, and the price of the recognition for which everyone so desperately yearns.
