Srećni hodočasnik

Mario Puzo

A poignant family saga about Lucia Santa, an Italian immigrant in New York who fiercely confronts poverty, family tragedies, and the challenges of raising children in a harsh new world.

The Fortunate Pilgrim (1965) is one of the earliest yet most personal works by the famous American writer Mario Puzo, author of the cult classic The Godfather. Puzo himself frequently stated that this novel was his favorite, regarding it as his finest and most mature literary achievement—one largely inspired by his own upbringing in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York. At the heart of the story is the proud, strong, and steadfast Lucia Santa, an Italian immigrant striving to build a better life in America for her large family. Through her character, Puzo masterfully portrays the fate of first-generation immigrants who, driven by the dream of the "Promised Land," arrived in New York only to confront the harsh realities of poverty, grueling physical labor, and a cultural divide. Lucia contends not only with destitution and family tragedies but also with a profound lack of understanding from her own children, who—growing up in America—gradually reject traditional Italian values. The novel is distinguished by its exceptionally vivid depiction of daily life in immigrant neighborhoods during the early 20th century. Without sugarcoating the facts, yet with great compassion and warmth, Puzo portrays family loyalty, the struggle for survival, and the immeasurable sacrifice of a mother who holds the family together. The Fortunate Pilgrim is a moving and authentic story about human resilience, pride, and the price paid to achieve the American Dream.
