Lucia contends not only with destitution and family tragedies but also with a profound lack of understanding from her own children, who—growing up in America—gradually reject traditional Italian values. The novel is distinguished by its exceptionally vivid depiction of daily life in immigrant neighborhoods during the early 20th century.
