42. paralela (1930) je prvi roman velike trilogije SAD autora Džona Dos Pasosa, jednog od najvažnijih američkih romana 20. veka. Delo je ambiciozna freska Sjedinjenih Američkih Država u prvim decenijama 20. veka.

Dos Pasos majstorski prepliće sudbine nekoliko likova iz različitih društvenih slojeva - od siromašnih radnika, sindikalista i novinara, preko ambicioznih biznismena, do žena koje se bore za mesto u društvu. Kroz njihove priče, roman prikazuje Ameriku u turbulentnom periodu: industrijalizacija, masovni štrajkovi, uspon kapitalizma, emigracija, političke borbe i duh koji prethodi Prvom svetskom ratu.

Dos Pasos koristi revolucionarnu tehniku pripovedanja: kombinuje realističnu prozu sa „filmskim novinama“ (montaže novinskih naslova, pesama i reklama), biografskim skicama stvarnih ljudi (Henri Ford, Teodor Ruzvelt, Ema Goldman, itd.) i introspektivnim „oko kamere“. Ovaj inovativni stil stvara dinamičan, filmski osećaj i daje romanu širinu i dubinu pravog nacionalnog epa.

42. paralela nije samo priča o pojedincima, već i snažna društvena kritika američkog kapitalizma i „američkog sna“ koji za mnoge ostaje nedostižan. Roman je i dokument vremena i univerzalna priča o mladosti, ambiciji, razočaranju i borbi za bolji život.
