The book combines historical chronicle, scientific achievements and cultural reflection, exploring how the idea of flight has shaped human imagination, art and society throughout the ages. The author, Oto Bihalji-Merin - here under the pseudonym Pierre Merin - begins with ancient myths, such as the flight of Icarus, moving on to Renaissance visionaries such as Leonardo da Vinci and his sketches of flying machines.
Bihalji-Merin then details key moments in the development of aviation, including the Wright Brothers' pioneering balloon flights, airships, and first airplanes. He places special emphasis on the cultural impact of flying, analyzing how artists and writers, from futurists to writers, depicted this technological revolution. The book highlights works of art inspired by flight, from paintings to poetic motifs.
Written in a vivid reportage style, Bihalji-Merin imbues enthusiasm for scientific progress with philosophical musings on the spiritual significance of flying. He also warns of potential dangers, such as the militarization of aviation. Unlike contemporary technical discussions of aviation, Merin offers a humanistic perspective, making the book a unique contribution to the literature on man's struggle to conquer the skies.
