In seinem preisgekrönten Roman (V.B.Z. Award für den besten unveröffentlichten Roman 2009) entführt Dragan Pavelić den Leser nach Bosnien, genauer gesagt in seine Heimatstadt Sarajevo, in eine Zeit, die die Lebensspanne der Hauptfigur (1890–1964) umfasst.

Es ist eine umfassende Prosa, sentimental intoniert, aus zwei Perspektiven erzählt, die Lebensgeschichte eines ungeliebten Bastards, eines Doppelmörders und eines Sträflings aus Lepoglava – eines durch und durch vorbildlichen Ehemanns, Vaters und Bürgers, die von Verbrechen und Strafe, von Leiden und Erlösung, von Liebe und Hass, von Träumen und Wirklichkeit spricht; über unterschiedliche Religionen und Kulturen, über den Zusammenprall von Moderne und Tradition, über Staaten und Ideologien.

Dragan Pavelić ist ein großer Verfechter des Geschichtenerzählens und seine leicht und einfach fließende Erzählweise ist tatsächlich vielschichtig und tief durchdacht, mit einer Vielzahl wohlgeformter Charaktere und ihrer Beziehungen.
