Braća Zemganno
A touching story about inseparable acrobat brothers, Gianni and Nio, whose dreams of mastering the circus arts are cut short by a tragic accident that fundamentally alters their lives and their bond as brothers.
The Zemganno Brothers (Les Frères Zemganno) is one of the most renowned works by the French writer Edmond de Goncourt. The Croatian edition, published in 1958 (Nakladni zavod Znanje), presents this classic of Impressionist realism, in which Goncourt portrays the little-known side of circus life with great detail and sensitivity. The plot follows two brothers, Gianni and Nello Zemganno, who perform as acrobats in a traveling circus. Bound by deep fraternal love and a passionate dedication to their art, the brothers aspire to more than merely providing cheap entertainment for the audience; they seek to create a completely new, refined, and perfect form of acrobatic skill. However, their ambitious journey is abruptly interrupted by an accident in which the younger brother, Nello, is severely injured. Through the motif of physical and psychological recovery, Goncourt poignantly explores themes of sacrifice, the loss of one's vocation, and unconditional loyalty. It is well known that, through the characters of the brothers, the author reflected his own exceptionally close relationship with his brother Jules, who died at a young age. The book offers both a fascinating glimpse into the atmosphere of the 19th-century circus and a moving study of artistic passion and strong family bonds.
