The Second Generation is a novel by American writer Howard Fast and a continuation of his famous family saga about the Lavette family. While the previous part focuses on the creation of the family's wealth and social position, this novel follows the lives of their children and grandchildren who grow up in different circumstances and face the new challenges of modern society.
The plot centers on members of the second generation who are trying to find their own identity in the shadow of their parents' success. Although they have inherited wealth, reputation and numerous opportunities, they face problems that material security cannot solve. Love relationships, business ambitions and personal dilemmas lead to conflicts between family members and reveal the complexity of their characters.
The novel depicts the changes that have marked American society during the 20th century. Through the fates of the characters, the author explores issues of family loyalty, personal freedom, responsibility and relationship to tradition. The younger generation often questions the values** of their parents, trying to harmonize inherited attitudes with new views on life.
The special value of the work lies in the convincing depiction of family relationships and psychologically developed characters. Fast shows how the success of one generation does not guarantee happiness for the next and how everyone must find their own path in life. The Second Generation is an interesting family saga about inheritance, change and the search for personal identity.
