Grimizni veo: pripovijest o svetoj Eufemiji

Grimizni veo: pripovijest o svetoj Eufemiji

Antun Milovan

Antun Milovan’s historical-religious narrative about Saint Euphemia depicts her life of martyrdom, her unwavering faith under Roman rule, and the miraculous arrival of her marble sarcophagus on the shores of Istria, in Rovinj.

The book The Crimson Veil: A Tale of Saint Euphemia (Grimizni veo: pripovijest o svetoj Eufemiji), by the Istrian priest, theologian, and writer Antun Milovan, is an inspired literary and hagiographic work dedicated to the patron saint of the city of Rovinj and of Istria. Through narrative, the author brings to life the early 4th century—a time of Diocletian’s persecution of Christians in the Asia Minor city of Chalcedon, where young Euphemia suffered martyrdom for her faith. Through evocative prose and vivid descriptions, Milovan portrays Euphemia’s inner strength, dignity, and devotion to Christian ideals. The "crimson veil" of the title symbolizes the blood of martyrdom, but also the royal dignity of faith that transcends fleeting suffering and earthly powers. The second part of the work places special emphasis on the legend and miracle of the year 800, when—according to tradition—a heavy marble sarcophagus containing the saint's body arrived by sea at the shores of Rovinj. The work blends historical facts, Christian tradition, and local Istrian identity. Written in an accessible yet spiritually rich style, the book is intended not only for devotees of Saint Euphemia and the faithful but also for anyone interested in the rich cultural, historical, and religious heritage of Istria.
