Bertil Malmberg

Bertil Malmberg was a leading Swedish linguist and a pioneer of modern phonetics. His work explains in detail the physiological, acoustic, and functional foundations of human speech, as well as the application of linguistics.

Bertil Malmberg (1913–1994) was a distinguished Swedish linguist and professor at Lund University who played a pivotal role in the development and popularization of general linguistics and phonetics during the second half of the 20th century. His work in phonetics encompassed a wide range of studies—from articulatory and acoustic phonetics to experimental research and structural phonology. In his key works—most notably the textbook Phonetics (La phonétique / Manuel de phonétique générale)—Malmberg approached speech analysis from three main perspectives: how sounds are produced by the speech apparatus (articulation), how they are transmitted through the air as sound waves (acoustics), and how they are perceived by the listener (auditory phonetics). His contribution to bridging the gap between pure phonetics (the physical and physiological nature of sound) and phonology (the function of sounds within the linguistic system) was particularly significant. His approach was systematic and accessible, which is why his textbooks served as standard university reading material around the world for decades. Malmberg also conducted research into child language acquisition, speech disorders, and Romance languages, leaving an indelible mark on modern linguistics.
