Gustav Schwab

Schwab retells the most famous Greek myths about gods, heroes, and legendary wars—from Prometheus, Heracles, and the Argonauts to the Trojan War and the wanderings of Odysseus—bringing the ancient world closer to young readers.

Tales from Classical Antiquity is the best-known work of the German writer Gustav Schwab. It is an extensive collection of Greek myths and heroic legends retold in a literary style, originally published between 1838 and 1840. Schwab adapted ancient sources into cohesive and accessible narratives—specifically aimed at young readers—and his work has served for generations as one of the most popular introductions to Greek mythology.

The book presents stories about the origins and deeds of the gods, mythical heroes, monsters, great exploits, and tragic fates. Among them are the myths of Prometheus, Deucalion and Pyrrha, Perseus and Medusa, Daedalus and Icarus, Theseus and the Minotaur, and the many feats of Heracles. It also recounts the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece, as well as the fates of Oedipus and his lineage.

A significant portion of the collection is dedicated to the Trojan War. Schwab narrates the Judgment of Paris, the abduction of Helen, the stories of Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, and other Greek and Trojan heroes, and the final fall of Troy. Following the war come stories of the heroes' returns, with a special place given to the long years of Odysseus's wanderings and his eventual homecoming to Ithaca.

Beneath the fantastic events, divine interventions, and heroic deeds lie enduring themes of love, courage, loyalty, revenge, hubris, guilt, and fate. In doing so, Schwab weaves individual myths into a broad picture of the ancient world, bringing the reader closer to the stories and figures that have profoundly influenced European literature, art, and culture.
