Madame Bovary

Madame Bovary

Gustave Flaubert

Emma Bovary, a provincial doctor's wife, seeks romantic happiness in love affairs and luxury. Her dreams collide with reality and lead to ruin.

Madame Bovary (1857) is Gustave Flaubert's masterpiece and one of the most influential novels of the 19th century. The work is crucial to the development of realism and the modern novel. Flaubert worked on it for five years, striving for the perfection of style – le mot juste (the right word). The novel caused a scandal for "immorality" and led to a trial (Flaubert was acquitted).

The plot follows the life of Emma Rouault, the daughter of a wealthy peasant, who marries Charles Bovary, a modest village doctor. Raised on romantic literature (Walter Scott, Lamartine), Emma dreams of passionate love, luxury and sublime feelings. Her marriage in provincial Yonville quickly becomes boring. She gives birth to her daughter Bertha, but motherhood does not fulfill her. She seeks meaning in extramarital affairs: first with the nobleman Rodolphe, then with the young notary Léon. She lives beyond her means, falls into debt and sinks into despair.

Flaubert masterfully depicts provincial life: the petty petty-bourgeoisie, hypocrisy, narrow-mindedness and banality of everyday life. Through characters such as the pharmacist Homais (a caricature of the petty bourgeois) and the priest Bournisien, he ironizes social institutions. The novel is a critique of romantic idealism and consumer society. Emma becomes a victim of her own illusions, but also of a society that offers women few choices outside of marriage and motherhood.

The style is revolutionary: objective, precise, ironically distant. Flaubert enters the consciousness of the characters (free indirect speech), but remains neutral – he does not condemn Emma directly, but shows the consequences of her choices. The descriptions are vividly painted: from village fairs to Emma's dresses and interior monologues. The novel ends tragically, but with deep humanity.

Madame Bovary influenced all of modern literature (from James Joyce to Nabokov). Often interpreted as a feminist work (the limitations of women's destiny), a critique of capitalism, or a study of boredom and desire, Emma Bovary has become the archetype of the unrealistic dreamer whose dreams collide with a drab reality.
