Istina i ljubav
*Truth and Love* presents a selection of Cankar’s short stories exploring themes of love, poverty, longing, and human suffering. With great compassion, the author portrays the ordinary person—their ideals, disappointments, and quest for truth.
Truth and Love is a collection of selected short stories by Ivan Cankar, one of the most important Slovenian writers of the Modernist era. In the stories gathered here, Cankar explores themes that define much of his body of work: love, poverty, family relationships, social injustice, loneliness, the longing for a better life, and the human need for understanding and closeness.
His protagonists are often ordinary, humble people—impoverished workers, children, mothers, artists, and individuals struggling to navigate a world marked by social inequality and a lack of compassion. Cankar portrays the inner lives of his characters with great intensity. Their hopes and dreams often clash with harsh reality, lending the stories a melancholic and sometimes tragic tone. Love emerges as one of life’s most vital values, yet it is not always happy or fulfilled; it is frequently intertwined with sacrifice, longing, disappointment, and the realization of truths about oneself and others.
Maternal love, compassion for the downtrodden and the poor, and a critique of a society that measures human worth by money and status hold a special place in Cankar’s work. The author blends realistic scenes of everyday life with symbolism and powerful emotional expression. Truth and Love thus brings the reader closer to Cankar’s humanistic worldview, in which human dignity, sincerity, love, and compassion stand in opposition to selfishness, injustice, and social indifference.
