Gran kanaria

Gran kanaria

Archibald Joseph Cronin

A.J. Cronin's novel follows the disgraced doctor Harvey Leith, who undergoes a catharsis on his way to the Canary Islands, saving his career and finding new hope in love.

Gran Canaria (1933) is a compelling and dynamic novel by A. J. Cronin that blends elements of medical drama, psychological introspection, and a romantic tale of survival and redemption. The plot follows Dr. Harvey Leith, a brilliant yet cynical and disillusioned bacteriologist who is unjustly blamed for the deaths of patients during a yellow fever epidemic in his native Scotland. Condemned by the public and stripped of his professional honor, Leith leaves his homeland and boards a cargo ship bound for Gran Canaria, carrying with him a profound sense of bitterness, isolation, and professional defeat.

During the voyage—and especially upon his arrival in the sunny, exotic Canary Islands—Leith encounters a variety of fellow travelers and their life stories. A pivotal turning point occurs when he meets Mary Fielding, a married woman fleeing an unhappy past, and when he once again confronts a dangerous, deadly epidemic on the island. Facing this new challenge, Leith risks his own life to investigate the disease and find a cure; in doing so, he not only clears his name and proves his expertise but also undergoes a profound inner catharsis.

Through this novel, Cronin masterfully explores themes of human resilience, moral responsibility, rising from the ashes, and the healing power of love and forgiveness.
