Tvoj sin Huckleberry Finn

Tvoj sin Huckleberry Finn

Bekim Sejranović

This autobiographical novel follows a journey along the Sava River, intertwining the search for personal identity, childhood memories, and a complex relationship with one's father with themes of freedom and transience.

Bekim Sejranović’s novel Your Son Huckleberry Finn (2016) is a moving and authentic work of prose that blends elements of the road novel (or, more aptly, the "river novel"), the meandering flow of memory, and the autobiographical account. The protagonist—the author’s alter ego—embarks on a journey in an old wooden boat up the Sava River, traveling from its confluence toward the town of his childhood, Brčko. This voyage becomes a metaphor for an inner journey through his own past, identity, addictions, nomadic restlessness, and the sense of rootlessness between Norway and the Balkans. Drawing directly upon Mark Twain’s famous classic, Sejranović constructs a reflective and emotional narrative centered on a complex, unresolved relationship with his terminally ill father. In the novel, the Sava River acts as a living organism—a space of absolute freedom, yet also a refuge from everyday traumas and the transience of life. Written in a distinctive, direct, and sincere style, the novel radiates melancholy, warmth, and self-deprecating humor. Your Son Huckleberry Finn is a poignant tribute to freedom, the river, and the enduring human need to find one’s own sanctuary and forgiveness.
