David Bischoff

A science-fiction thriller by David Bischoff. A young hacker accidentally breaks into a U.S. military supercomputer system and triggers a nuclear war simulation that threatens to spark a real World War III.

The story follows David Lightman, a bright but irresponsible high school student and talented hacker who, while searching for new, unreleased computer games on his home computer, accidentally connects to a secret military supercomputer known as WOPR (located at NORAD headquarters). Believing he has found an advanced simulation game called "Global Thermonuclear War," David starts playing, unaware that the computer is programmed to independently control the US nuclear arsenal and cannot distinguish reality from simulation. The supercomputer initiates global preparations for an attack, leading US military leaders to believe that the Soviet Union has launched nuclear missiles. Once David realizes the danger, a tense race against time ensues in which he—aided by his friend Jennifer and the computer's creator, Dr. Falken—attempts to stop the supercomputer from playing the "game" to its conclusion and launching actual missiles. Bischoff’s novelization faithfully captures the film's suspense and offers additional insight into the characters' psychology; furthermore, written in the early 1980s, it remarkably anticipated the dangers associated with artificial intelligence, computer hacking, and the automation of military systems during the Cold War era.
