Oblik duše

Gordana Benić

Gordana Benić’s poetry collection presents rich Mediterranean and metaphysical poetry. Through motifs of stone, light, the palace, and dreams, the author explores the mysterious transformations of the soul and the realm of spirituality.

Oblik duše (The Shape of the Soul) is a poetry collection by one of the most prominent contemporary Croatian poets, Gordana Benić. Known for her distinctive, visually rich, and meditative lyricism, the author continues in this work to explore the realms where the real and the mystical, the historical and the metaphysical, converge. Gordana Benić’s poetic world is deeply rooted in the Mediterranean landscape—both physical and spiritual—drawing particularly on motifs such as Diocletian’s Palace, ancient stone, the sea, shadows, and a unique quality of light. Yet, in Oblik duše, this physical space serves merely as a backdrop for an inner pilgrimage. Here, stone is not merely inert matter but a guardian of memory, while architectural spaces are transformed into the inner landscapes of the human psyche and spirit. Her expression is poetic and multi-layered, imbued with a hermetic quality and surreal imagery reminiscent of dreamlike visions. The author interrogates the nature of existence and the invisible forces that shape the human inner life, ceaselessly seeking the geometry and "shape" of that elusive entity: the human soul. Oblik duše represents the pinnacle of her poetic maturity, offering the reader a unique aesthetic and spiritual experience.
