Ruby započinje priču od trenutka svog začeća 1951. godine – slučajnog, u hotelskoj sobi tijekom vjenčanja sestre Patricije – gdje kao fetus čuje unutarnje monologe majke Bunty, kronične nesretnice zarobljene u braku s blagim, ali neodlučnim Georgeom. Bunty, obilježena postporođajnom depresijom nakon rođenja Patricije i Deborah, vidi život kao beskrajnu litaniju razočaranja: "Zašto se uvijek događa meni?"

Priča se širi u multigeneracijsku sagu "Obitelji", od kraja 19. stoljeća, kada prabaka Alice, krhka ljepotica, bježi s francuskim fotografom Reginaldom, ostavljajući za sobom skandale i tajne. Preko generacija – majke Nell, bake Clarisse – prolaze svjetski ratovi, gubici djece (smrt malog brata Billyja u požaru), izdaje i opsesije prošlošću. Ruby, opsjednuta muzejskim predmetima koji nose priče (poput vjenčanog prstena ili fotografije), rekonstruira obiteljsku povijest kroz humorne, ali bolne anegdote: Buntyina ljubav s prodavačem ribe, Patricijina trudnoća, Deborahina buntovnost.

Atkinson miješa humor, ironiju i tužnu introspekciju, istražujući teme nasljeđa, gubitka, utjecaja ratova na žene i identiteta u kaosu obitelji. Rubyin glas – pametan, sarkastičan, suosjećajan – čini roman vječnim portretom engleske provincije, gdje svaki predmet krije tajnu, a svaka priča iscjeljuje rane.
