Kad je bio juli

Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar

The award-winning epistolary novel by Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar tells the poignant story of a boy named Mirza who writes letters to his dead father about the 1995 Srebrenica tragedy in the "safe zone".

The novel When It Was July by the esteemed Bosnian-Herzegovinian writer Nura Bazdulj-Hubijar is an exceptional and moving work written in the form of letters. The plot follows a boy Mirza who writes letters to his dead father (grandmother), intertwining images of an idyllic shared past with the horrific and traumatic events of July 1995 in Srebrenica – the then United Nations “safe zone” that became the scene of one of the greatest sufferings in modern history.

Through the boy’s authentic, immediate and extremely emotional vision, the author’s voice skillfully uses a specific Eastern Bosnian idiom that enhances the impression of unadulterated reality and childish innocence thrown into the whirlpool of war madness. The letters addressed to his father simultaneously function as a cry and a painfully precise testimony addressed to the entire modern world about powerlessness, fear, loss and survival in the most unprotected corner of the plan.

Devoid of pathos, mythomania and politicking, this novel strongly shakes the reader, warns and preserves the collective memory from oblivion, remaining one of the most significant literary works inspired by the Srebrenica tragedy.
