Peter Sloterdijk

Peter Sloterdijk (Karlsruhe, Germany, June 26, 1947) is a German philosopher, essayist, and cultural critic, and one of the most prominent contemporary European thinkers. His body of work encompasses philosophical anthropology, cultural criticism, politics, religion, technology, and the theory of modern society.
He studied philosophy, German studies, and history in Munich and Hamburg, receiving his doctorate in 1976. During the 1970s, he spent time in India, and his experience with Eastern spiritual traditions influenced his later work. From 1992, he taught philosophy and aesthetics at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, serving as its rector from 2001 to 2015.
He gained international attention with the book Critique of Cynical Reason (1983), in which he analyzes modern cynicism as a state of society that recognizes the contradictions of its own actions yet continues to perpetuate them. The work became one of the most widely read philosophical texts in post-war Germany.
In the book Thinker on Stage: Nietzsche’s Materialism (1986), he explores Nietzsche’s philosophy, while in Eurotaoism (1989), he examines the relationship between modernity, technology, and globalization.
His most ambitious project is the Spheres trilogy, comprising Bubbles (1998), Globes (1999), and Foam (2004). In it, he develops spherology, a philosophical theory regarding the space of human coexistence, ranging from intimate relationships to complex social and civilizational structures.
His notable works include Rules for the Human Zoo (1999), Rage and Time (2006), You Must Change Your Life (2009), In the Same Boat, God's Zeal, and Stress and Freedom.
Sloterdijk’s philosophy is distinguished by a provocative style, interdisciplinarity, and original metaphors. His discussions on biotechnology, religion, globalization, and social inequality have sparked numerous controversies.
Through his extensive body of work, Sloterdijk has profoundly influenced contemporary philosophy of culture, political theory, architecture, and social criticism, raising new questions about the human condition in a technologically shaped world.
