Roman je strukturiran u tri dela, od kojih se svaki odvija u različitom istorijskom periodu, ali svi povezani kroz lik glavnog junaka, Tonija Longina. Kroz ova tri života Brešan istražuje teme identiteta, istorije i sudbine hrvatskog naroda.

U prvom dijelu, smještenom u vrijeme Domovinskog rata, Toni Longin, univerzitetski profesor istorije, odlazi u Zadar na dvadesetogodišnjicu mature 1991. Ophrvan ratnim događajima i ličnim problemima, odlučuje da se uključi u odbranu grada. Tokom borbi, teško je ranjen i pada u komu, iz koje se budi četiri godine kasnije, suočen sa promenjenim ličnim i društvenim okolnostima.

Drugi deo romana vraća se u 9. vek, gde Toni Longin preuzima ulogu istoričara i svedoka ključnih događaja tog vremena. Ovaj segment istražuje rane istorijske korijene hrvatskog identiteta i društvenih struktura.

Treći deo smešten je u moderna vremena, gde Toni Longin preispituje svoju ulogu u društvu i suočava se sa posledicama prošlih odluka. Kroz introspektivno putovanje, autor analizira uticaj istorije na individualnu i kolektivnu svest.

Kroz lik Tonija Longina, Brešan opisuje kako se pojedinac nosi sa promenama u različitim istorijskim periodima, ističući univerzalne teme borbe, identiteta i prilagođavanja. Roman kombinuje elemente istorijske fikcije i introspektivnog narativa, pružajući čitaocu dubok uvid u složenost ljudske prirode i društvenih promena.
